Anyone else over 40 spending more time looking up tips and tricks for skin care and make up?
I have been collecting tips and ideas on Pinterest for years now. I try them too! Well, I try the ones that are reasonable and affordable for me.
*disclaimer* I am not a beauty blogger, nor am I trying to be. I am just an average midlife mom trying to look my best affordably with practical tips that can be applied with little time or effort! Too much to ask? I don't think so either!
Here are 5 tips and tricks that I have personally tried and found that actually worked!
1 )A package of makeup remover cleansing wipes by your bed.
For those “lazy” nights or late nights when you just can’t bring yourself to go through your whole night time skin care routine.
I know, I know, its terrible to sleep with your makeup on and I make myself sick sometimes thinking about how great I would look if I started consistently removing my makeup and doing my skin care routine every night at the age of 16 and never stopped.
The reality is, I didn’t do that, I have slept with my makeup on way too many nights. That's why this is golden for me! I never thought of doing this before I saw this idea.
I now have a pack of makeup remover wipes in the drawer of my nightstand and if I find myself laying down and dozing off before I wash my face I grab one and use it!
With this quick fix at least my skin can breath and I won’t be smearing all the makeup and dirt from the day into my pores all night long.
2) DIY Tinted Moisturizer
If you are over 40 and approaching 50 quickly like I am then you are well aware older skin is dryer. Due to hormonal changes that a naturally occur with age but at varying rates for each of us. If you have dry skin to begin with its even worse.
I found this tip on a list of 17 Makeup and Beauty Tips for older women helps with that dry skin look.
I don’t often go for a complete no make-up look but more youthful looking skin? Yes please!
I had succumb to a bad habit of over applying foundation and powder. On an older face with more wrinkles and dryness (that's me!) this is not a good look. So I tried this trick and it works! My skin looked softer and younger immediately.
Full disclosure - I occasionally revisit this bad habit and writing this post for you reminded me to try the DIY tinted moisturizer tip again and I am so thankful! I highly recommend this tip, especially if you feel (and see) yourself applying more and more foundation and powder.
Personally I apply my concealer under my eyes and the rest of my makeup as well, trying to skip the powder or only applying very, very lightly now. So although I didn’t go for the no-makeup look making my DIY tinted moisturizer and using it as my foundation is a tip that works for me!
3) Translucent Powdering Lashes
As we age our eye lashes lose thickness. Another tip I found on the same list of 17 Makeup and Beauty Tips mentioned above is to prime and coat your lashes with translucent powder before applying mascara.
It helps thicken your lashes and it works!
What you do is use a clean wand (money saving tip, don’t throw away all your old mascara wands, clean one and save it for things like this!) dust it with translucent powder. Only have pressed powder? Just loosen it up with the wand, it will work the same way. Apply the powder to your lashes. Then apply two coats of your mascara. Use the clean wand again to remove excess, smooth out the mascara and give your lashes a clean, full look.
4) Eye Shadow Primer
This is a tip that may add to your budget because you may not currently use an eye shadow primer, it worth it! You may have noticed suddenly it seems you put on your eye shadow and soon after it looks like you do not have any eye shadow on at all, or that part of it has come off!
I started to wonder why is my eye shadow suddenly coming off all the time? Answer: age, again…
9 Makeup Rules for Women Over 40 explains it like this,
“Your eyelids can shrink as the skin above them starts to droop, and "smaller eyelids get warmer," says Linter. That means you're at greater risk of having your eye shadow slide off. Eye primer will prevent a makeup meltdown, keep it from settling into fine lines and wrinkles, and mask imperfections like veins and age spots, which become more obvious as eyelid skin thins.”
So I tried it and it works!
I have other eyelid issues, such as hooded eyes which is making this aging and sagging even worse, another post on eye shadow tips for hooded eyes coming up but in the meantime, try this!
Not only will your eye shadow stay on, it will go on smoother and look smoother than ever!
5) Invest in better makeup.
This is a tip from me. I am not super fancy and I am not a professional beauty blogger but I do like makeup and wear it every day.
I used to buy drug store brands for budgeting reasons and several years ago realized my older skin just wasn’t looking as great in the budget brands I was buying.
At that time I invested in my first better quality brand foundation and powder set but stayed with budget brand eye shadows and everything else.
Since that time I have made the investment in better brands for skin care, foundation, eye shadow, primers and even setting sprays. I have not regretted making this investment in myself!
If you have a list of budget brands that work just as well as some of the prestige brands please let me know! Comment below! I am not sponsored or promoting any prestige brands and am all about budgeting.
I hope this helped you! We need to stick together ladies and help each other embrace our age, enhance our beauty and gracefully walk into our 2nd acts and beyond!
